Easy on the back! July 29, 2010 Rae Littlewood (Albuquerque, NM United States) We transitioned from the baby bjorn to the ergobaby at around 6 months because the baby bjorn was killing our backs! The ergobaby is much easier on the back thanks to the hip belt but it is limited in not having baby able to face forward. At 6 months, he has a hard time seeing out over the top of the carrier (just his head sticks out) but he doesn't protest too much so it is okay for him, maybe not for all babies. The one draw back is that it is difficult to buckle the top strap in back without another person. We haven't attempted to put him on our backs yet as he is still too small but I think that will be great once he is bigger. Overall, I highly recommend!
Also, I debated on getting the sport vs. traditional but opted for the sport because we live in a hot climate. I am glad that we went with that option, the fabric is much lighter but my question to the makers is: "Why make the lighter-weight version that is supposedly better for hot climates in only one color option - BLACK???? HOT!!!"
Great carrier, but a sweaty baby! July 20, 2010 Devoted Satellite (washington, DC) This is a great carrier. I like how you can use it as a back or hip carrier. My husband and I like to hike and we took our 12 month old son out hiking with it and it was great; comfortable and our son seemed to like it fine for about an hour before he started getting fussy. The only con is that if your back sweats while you are wearing it, the baby will get drenched in sweat. Nothing a good bath won't fix, but be warned. I washed the carrier afterward too and it came through the washer and dryer just fine.
Fantastic but a bit warm July 13, 2010 K. Martin (Arlington, Texas United States) We love, love, love our Ergo! It is fantastic when the stroller just isn't an option of when I need to have my hands free. My son cuddles up and falls asleep almost instantly. It does get uncomfortably warm for both of us in the summer, but I'm not certain there's anything to be done about this. All in all, the Ergo is one of our very best and most useful baby purchases.
Frustrating June 30, 2010 dutchrusk I have used this for months, so i can't give it one star. but compared to my wife's original ergo, this (the only carrier a fat dad like me can use) is very poorly designed. the aeration slit/flap is useless and annoying (it necessitates moving the supporting straps to a less useful position), the elastic hoodie straps are awful and very difficult to attach when needed, the back straps-and-clip are also hard to attach and annoyingly prone to getting stuck/tangled. the belt clip has a tendency to only engage halfway. the thick waist strap also gets twisted out of shape. it's also black, great for (theoretically) assuaging male insecurities, but actually heat-retaining in summer. useful, but could have been so, so much better.
It's great only if your baby likes it June 10, 2010 B. Yee (Redondo Beach) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I registered for this Ergo carrier after a friend of mine recommended it to me and I received it for my baby shower. I read so many great reviews for it and loved the fact that I could carry my baby in front, in back, and on the hip with it- as opposed to the Bjorn which I can only carry in the front. I knew that I could only carry the baby facing me when carried in the front position, but since I figured I'd be able to use it also when the baby's older and carry him on my back or on my hip, I decided to sacrifice that feature. I saw so many of my friends use it too and their babies seemed to really like being in it. I also ordered the infant insert to go with it.
My baby boy liked being in the Ergo with the infant insert the first couple of weeks I put him in it. It was easy to put on and felt comfortable. I like the Sport carrier because my husband could use it as well. When my baby was in it with the infant insert, it was like he was sitting in the insert and his legs would be in front of my stomach. It wasn't that big of a deal in the beginning until he got really big. I couldn't use the infant insert anymore, but he hated spreading his legs so that they would stick out of the sides of the carrier. I'd be able to get one leg out, but then the other leg would be hitting my stomach. He's not big enough yet to spread his legs out all the way out the sides. The Bjorn has holes for the legs to go straight down. I think my baby would probably be better in that right now.
My friends love the Ergo, and I love it too- but my baby's not a huge fan of it right now. I'm hoping that once he's bigger, he'll like it. I'm going to keep trying to use it, but unfortunately, he's at the ackward stage and isn't really comfortable in it.
UPDATE: My baby is 4 months old and 17.5 lbs and STILL does not like the Ergo because he doesn't like to spread his legs that far apart (and I'm very thin!) I haven't tried the hip position, but I will later on. I got the K'Tan carrier instead and my baby enjoys it and it doesn't hurt my back like the Bjorn. The Ergo's definitely the MOST comfortable though.
